Association of pre-ESKD hyponatremia with post-ESKD outcomes among incident ESKD patients
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Aug 25, 2021
Marroquin MV, Sy J, Kleine CE, et al. - Higher risk of all-cause, cardiovascular (CV), and infection-related mortalities and hospitalization rates post-ESKD (end-stage kidney disease) transition was observed in relation to hyponatremia prior to ESKD transition.
A retrospective cohort study was conducted.
Participants were 32,257 US veterans transitioning to ESKD from October 1, 2007 to March 30, 2015.
Mean±SD serum sodium was 139 ± 3 mEq/L in this cohort.
The lowest serum sodium group (<130 mEq/L), vs the reference of 135-<144 mEq/L, was found to have a 54% higher all-cause mortality risk (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.54) in the fully adjusted model.
For CV and infection-related mortality as well as hospitalization outcomes, similar associations were seen.
