Association of oral contraceptives and tubal ligation with risk of early natural menopause
Human Reproduction Apr 12, 2021
Langton CR, Whitcomb BW, Purdue-Smithe AC, et al. - Researchers examined if oral contraceptives (OCs) and tubal ligation (TL) associate with early natural menopause. They conducted a population-based study within the prospective Nurses’ Health Study II (NHSII) cohort and followed the participants from 1989 to 2017. Overall they included 106,633 NHSII members who were premenopausal and aged 25-42 years at baseline. Assessment of use, duration and type of OC, and TL was done at baseline and every 2 years. The participants were assessed for menopause status and age every 2 years. Findings revealed no association of OC use with the risk of early natural menopause; however, TL was linked with a modestly higher risk.
