Association of obesity with adverse long-term outcomes in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
JAMA Nov 12, 2019
Fumagalli C, Maurizi N, Day SM, et al. - Researchers examined how BMI affects long-term outcomes in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) with respect to overall disease progression, heart failure symptoms, and arrhythmias. In this international cohort study, they analyzed retrospective data from 3,282 participants of the ongoing, prospective Sarcomeric Human Cardiomyopathy Registry—an international database created by 8 high-volume HCM centers. They observed a high prevalence of obesity among patients with HCM, and noted an independent correlation of a BMI > 30 with atrial fibrillation, disease progression, and heart failure onset, irrespective of age, sex, outflow tract obstruction, and genotype. The researchers suggested that strategies focusing on obesity control via proactive counselling should be part of daily clinical practice and risk factor control.
