Association of mortality with aortic stenosis severity in outpatients

JAMA Cardiology Dec 17, 2021

Coisne A, Montaigne D, Aghezzaf S, et al. - An elevated risk of mortality may not exist in asymptomatic patients with moderate aortic stenosis (AS) receiving standard symptomatic and echocardiographic follow-up.

  • This is a cohort study wherein 2,703 patients with mild, moderate, and severe AS were followed up by 117 cardiologists for a median of 2.1 years.

  • Of participants, those suffering from moderate AS were found to have a slightly higher risk of cardiovascular death compared with patients having mild AS, but this risk was much lower than that noted in severe AS.

  • Moreover, in asymptomatic cases, moderate and mild AS was identified to be linked with similar cardiovascular death.
