Association of monocyte migration marker CD11b with pulmonary function in people living with HIV

Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Feb 17, 2021

Kuniholm MH, Bramah-Lawani M, Fitzpatrick M, et al. - Whether CD4 and CD8 T-cell and monocyte phenotypes were related to lung function in people living with HIV and those without HIV, was determined herein. From the Pittsburgh HIV Lung Cohort, 142 HIV-positive and 73 HIV-negative participants were selected and analyzed for markers of T cell differentiation, activation, exhaustion and senescence, as well as for markers of monocyte recruitment and migration. Lung function testing was performed in all participants. Findings revealed a positive link of CD11b + expression on classical monocytes with forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity ratio in people living with HIV including in those with CD4 T-cell recovery. In view of the normal surveillance activity of monocytes, such link indicates a likely role of this monocyte subset in preservation of lung function in PLWH.
