Association of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 with death and atherosclerotic events in chronic kidney disease

American Journal of Nephrology Jun 12, 2018

Gregg LP, et al. - Researchers used a population-based, probability-sampled, longitudinal cohort to examine the association of plasma monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1; a marker of inflammation and monocyte recruitment to atherosclerotic plaques) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albuminuria, death, and intermediate and hard cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and non-CKD individuals. They noted an increase in plasma MCP-1 with decreasing eGFR, but MCP-1 continued to be an independent risk factor for death in CKD. In the link between MCP-1 and death in CKD, the involvement of pathways other than atherosclerosis was suggested by the observed lack of correlation between MCP-1 and intermediate CV outcomes.
