Association of lumbar puncture with spinal hematoma in patients with and without coagulopathy

JAMA Oct 18, 2020

Bodilsen J, Mariager T, Vestergaard HH, et al. - Researchers undertook this Danish nationwide, population-based cohort study to evaluate spinal hematoma risk following lumbar puncture in patients with and without coagulopathy. Participants were individuals who had lumbar puncture done and underwent cerebrospinal fluid testing (January 1, 2008-December 31, 2018; followed up through October 30, 2019). Experts focused on 30-day risk of spinal hematoma. Findings revealed that patients without coagulopathy and those with coagulopathy had a risk of 0.20% and 0.23%, respectively, for developing spinal hematoma post- lumbar puncture. Although these data may inform decision-making regarding lumbar puncture by defining rates in this sample, the documented rates may reflect bias because of physicians choosing relatively low-risk patients for lumbar puncture.
