Association of longitudinal alcohol consumption trajectories with coronary heart disease: A meta-analysis of six cohort studies using individual participant data
BMC Medicine Aug 25, 2018
O’Neill D, et al. - This study draws on data from six cohorts (five British and one French) to assess the relationship between long-term alcohol consumption trajectories and coronary heart disease (CHD). Researchers found that recent and more long-term abstainers were at elevated risk of developing CHD, as were those whose moderation was inconsistent. For consistently heavy drinkers, no evidence of elevated CHD risk was observed. A weak connection with fatal CHD for inconsistently heavy drinkers was reduced following adjustment for confounding factors. The study findings suggested that the lack of an effect among heavy drinkers should be viewed with caution given the known wider health risks related to such intake.
