Association of herpes zoster and chronic inflammatory skin disease in US inpatients
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Feb 25, 2020
Chovatiya R, et al. - To determine whether there is an association between chronic inflammatory skin disease (CISD) and herpes zoster (HZ). From the 2002 to 2012 Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a representative cohort of US hospitalizations (N = 68,088,221 children and adults), researchers assessed data for this analysis. Multivariable logistic regression models including age, gender, race/ethnicity, insurance, household income, and long-term systemic corticosteroid use, revealed the association of hospitalization for HZ with atopic dermatitis, pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid, mycosis fungoides, dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, vitiligo, and sarcoidosis. In bivariable models, increased odds were evident in correlation with only lichen planus, Sézary syndrome, morphea, and pyoderma gangrenosum. Similar results were observed for sensitivity analyses among those younger than 60 and younger than 50 years. Female gender, fewer chronic conditions, and long-term systemic corticosteroid use were identified as predictors of HZ in CISD.
