Association of gender with outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention

JAMA Nov 11, 2019

Chichareon P, Modolo R, Kerkmeijer L, et al. - Researchers examined how gender is associated with patient outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention. They performed a prespecified subgroup analysis of the GLOBAL LEADERS randomized clinical trial evaluating 2 strategies of antiplatelet therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention in an unselected population including 130 secondary/tertiary care hospitals in different countries. Outcomes revealed no between-gender difference in the risk of 2-year all-cause mortality or new Q-wave myocardial infarction. Women exhibited higher risks of bleeding and hemorrhagic stroke than men. Relative to dual antiplatelet therapy, ticagrelor monotherapy was correlated with lower risk of bleeding at 1 year in men but not in women.
