Association of adipokines with rheumatic disease activity indexes and periodontal disease in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis and their first-degree relatives

International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Nov 07, 2019

Chaparro-Sanabria JA, Bautista-Molano W, Bello-Gualtero JM, et al. - In a cross-sectional study with early RA (eRA) individuals, first-degree relatives (FDR) and a healthy population, researchers assessed the adipokine levels in early eRA and FDR of persons with RA and authenticated their correlation with rheumatic disease activity and periodontal variables. The disease activity was could be modulated by high adipokine levels in eRA. Having more than one adipokine at high serum levels was discovered to be related to raised disability, disease activity, and BMI, suggesting that RA is controlled through adiponectin levels in the early stages of the disease. Moreover, high leptin levels, presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis and swollen joints could be the factors related to the development of RA in FDR.
