Association between wait time for transcatheter aortic valve replacement and early postprocedural outcomes
Journal of the American Heart Association Jan 10, 2019
Elbaz-Greener G, et al. - Researchers performed this population-based study in Ontario, Canada, to examine if there was a link between transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) wait times and postprocedural outcomes via multivariable regression models. Of the 2,170 TAVR procedures performed between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2016 analyzed in this study, 1,741 were elective and 429 were urgent. The number of days between initial referral and the procedure defined the wait time. Findings revealed a significant, nonlinear correlation between TAVR wait time and post-TAVR 30-day mortality and 30-day readmission. However, no association was found between wait times and postprocedural outcomes, after adjustment based on case urgency status. Overall, a complex association of wait time with postprocedural outcomes was suggested that was mediated entirely by urgency status.
