Association between sleep quality, mood status, and ocular surface characteristics in patients with dry eye disease

Cornea Feb 08, 2019

Wu M, et al. - Investigators examined 106 candidates with dry eye disease (DED) and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls to assess the sleep and mood status in subjects with DED and also to analyze the association between these determinants and ocular surface characteristics. They recorded significantly higher mean Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score in cases with DED. They also noted higher respective depression and anxiety scores in DED cases as compared to controls. They noticed an important role of sleep quality in the development of DED affecting tear secretion and tear film stability and/or by indirectly aggravating anxiety and depression, prompting higher self-reported symptom scores.
