Association between race and receipt of counselling or medication for smoking cessation in primary care

Hooks-Anderson DR, et al. - In this study, experts sought to investigate if African American vs. white patients in primary care was less likely to receive any treatment or whether race disparities were specific to the type of treatment offered using data pulled from a large electronic health record system. To assist in smoking cessation, less than 20% of smokers received any type of therapy. A race disparity was observed in the type of smoking cessation therapy provided to white and African American primary care patients. To increase treatment rates and eliminate disparities, an additional study was required.
