Association between pulmonary embolism and COVID-19 severe pneumonia: Experience from two centers in the core of the infection Italian peak

European Journal of Radiology Mar 02, 2021

Valle C, Bonaffini PA, Corso MD, et al. - In view of the possibility that clinical conditions can be precipitated by pulmonary embolism (PE) in COVID-19 patients, researchers here examined PE distribution on CTA and determined if there is any association with D-dimer (DD), pulmonary stage of disease and prognosis. They retrospectively enrolled a cohort of 114 patients (mean age 61 years; 26.3% females) with severe COVID-19 pneumonia, who had undergone a CTA examination for PE suspicion. Among severe COVID-19 patients, PE is identified to be a frequent complication, particularly during central parenchymal stages and despite ongoing anticoagulant therapy. Pulmonary embolism does not appear to influence short-term mortality. Findings suggest a crucial role of CTA and DD levels in the assessment of suspected PE, despite anticoagulant therapies, as well as in attaining proper information concerning lung involvement extent.
