Association between Helicobacter pylori gastritis and dental diseases: A cross-sectional, hospital-based study in Eastern Saudi Arabia
Journal of Periodontology Apr 10, 2019
Alagl AS, et al. - Researchers performed this cross-sectional study to investigate how gastric H. pylori colonization is associated with oral H. pylori colonization. Further, they assessed the link between colonization of H. pylori and dental diseases. In King Fahad University hospital in Khobar, Eastern Saudi Arabia, they recruited patients admitted to the Endoscopy Unit and clinically examined them for plaque, decayed teeth (D), filled teeth (F), missing teeth (M), periodontal pocket depth (PPD), attachment loss (AL), and gingival bleeding in addition to assessing their age, gender, education, tooth brushing, flossing, and tobacco use with a questionnaire. In patients with good oral hygiene and moderate socioeconomic status, no significant correlation of the presence of gastric and oral H. pylori with periodontal diseases was observed. They noted a higher number of decayed and missing teeth among patients with gastritis.
