Association between chronic kidney disease and carotid intima-media thickness in relation to circulating CD34-positive cell count among community-dwelling elderly Japanese men
Atherosclerosis Feb 17, 2019
Shimizu Y, et al. - Researchers examined the link between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) with respect to circulating CD34-positive cell (bone-derived progenitor cells) count in this cross-sectional study. Participants included 570 elderly Japanese men (aged 60-69 years) who underwent general health check-ups and were stratified as per a median circulating CD34-positive cell count (1.01 cells/μL). According to findings, participants with elevated circulating CD34-positive cell counts demonstrated a positive association between CIMT and CKD; however, this link was not found in participants with low counts. The link between CKD and CIMT might be determined by endothelial repair activity.
