Association between black race and presentation and liver-related outcomes of patients with autoimmune hepatitis

Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Feb 15, 2019

de Boer YS, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers characterized the presentation and outcome in black and white patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). This study collects information from databases of patients with AIH attending the Institute of Liver studies at King's College Hospital, London (1971–October 2015, the Royal Free Hospital, London (1982 through December 2016) and the multicenter Dutch Autoimmune Hepatitis Study Group cohort (2006–August 2016). Comparing black and white patients with AIH in Europe, investigators found that black patients had higher levels of IgG at a younger age and a higher proportion had systemic lupus erythematosus. In addition, they found that black patients were at a higher risk of liver transplantation and liver-related mortality, indicating a more aggressive disease. No significant difference was found in proportions of patients with a response to standard therapy or in the rate of relapse.
