Association between age‐related macular degeneration and periodontal and peri‐implant diseases: A systematic review
Acta Ophthalmologica Oct 07, 2020
Javed F, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) and periodontal and peri‐implant diseases. Five observational cohort studies were involved that evaluated the link between AMD and periodontitis. The number of patients with and without AMD ranged between 54 and 90 and 1,697 and 12,171 people, respectively. Outcomes from all studies reported a direct link between AMD and periodontitis. The relation between AMD and peri-implant diseases has not been evaluated in any studies. There is also a debatable correlation between AMD and periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Further well‐designed and power‐adjusted studies are required to determine whether or not a ‘true’ connection exists between AMD and periodontal and peri‐implant diseases.
