Assessment of the reliability of radiographic signs on panoramic radiographs to determine the relationship between mandibular third molars and the inferior alveolar canal

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology Sep 21, 2019

Uzun C, et al. - Using chi-square statistics and logistic regression analysis, researchers evaluated the accuracy of radiographic signs of the connection between impacted mandibular third molars (IMTM) and the inferior alveolar canal (IAC) on panoramic radiographs (PRs) as risk indicators for IAC exposure during extraction. Seven radiographic signs were evaluated as present or absent on PRs regarding the appearance of roots and IAC. A total of 198 IMTMs were involved in this investigation. According to results, IAC exposure was linked to four radiographic signs (darkening of the root, narrowing of the root, narrowing of the IAC, and diversion of the IAC). Findings suggested that panoramic radiography is helpful during IMTM extraction to assess the danger of IAC exposure. There was no significant correlation between IAC exposure and inferior alveolar nerve damage.
