Assessment of methylene chloride–related fatalities in the United States, 1980-2018
JAMA Jun 11, 2021
Hoang A, Fagan K, Cannon DL, et al. - Researchers aimed at describing the characteristics of fatalities linked with exposure to methylene chloride, a halogenated organic solvent widely utilized in paint strippers, cleaners, adhesives, and sealants in the United States. They assessed a case series of 85 methylene chloride–related fatalities from 1980 to 2018 identified by performing systematic searches of sources, including PubMed and government databases. Most of these deaths occurred at work. Despite US regulatory policies having mandated product labeling and worker protections, fatalities are continually reported, with a higher proportion of recent deaths linked to the use of paint-stripping products. They emphasize using safer substitutes, not hazard warnings or reliance on personal protective equipment, for prevention of methylene chloride–related fatalities.
