Assessment of 30-day mortality and complication rates associated with extended deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis following hip fracture surgery
Injury Mar 23, 2018
Durand WM, et al. - This retrospective cohort study of the 2016 ACS NSQIP was undertaken to assess the association between prescription of extended DVT prophylaxis and 30-day postoperative complications following hip fracture surgery. Data revealed 67% lower odds of death and significantly lower rates of acute kidney injury and stroke/CVA among hip fracture surgery patients prescribed ≥28 days of postoperative DVT prophylaxis compared to those prescribed short-duration prophylaxis. The data thereby emphasized on considering ≥28 days of DVT prophylaxis following hip fracture surgery for patients without explicit contraindications.
