BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Mar 18, 2021
Uwambaye P, Munyanshongore C, Rulisa S, et al. - Via performing a retrospective case-control study, researchers here examined the correlation between maternal periodontitis and premature birth. In addition, they sought to report on a new screening tool recommended for use by nurses and midwives to screen for periodontal diseases during antenatal consultations for improving the health of mothers and children. This retrospective case-control study was conducted at 12 health facilities enrolling a total of 555 women in the postpartum period. Periodontitis and premature birth were identified exhibiting a statistically significant association. The odds of giving birth to premature infants were 6 times for the women who had periodontitis relative to women who had no periodontitis.
