Aspirin, paracetamol (acetaminophen) and caffeine for the treatment of acute migraine attacks: A systemic review and meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials

European Journal of Neurology Oct 02, 2021

Diener HC, Gaul C, Lehmacher W, et al. - The study found that aspirin, paracetamol, and caffeine (APC) are more effective than placebo in treating acute migraine attacks. The efficacy, as judged by pain-free reaction and pain alleviation after 2 hours, was clinically relevant.

  • Seven studies with a total of 3,306 individuals were considered (2,147 treated with APC and 1,159 treated with placebo).

  • APC outperformed placebo in the primary efficacy endpoint of being pain-free after 2 hours.

  • APC outperformed placebo in the co-primary effectiveness endpoint of pain reduction at 2 hours.

  • Adverse events were more common in the APC groups than in the placebo groups.
