Artificial urinary sphincter longevity following transurethral resection of the prostate in the setting of prostate cancer
World Journal of Urology Mar 07, 2019
Cohen AJ, et al. - From 2002 to 2014, researchers examined the artificial urinary sphincter longevity after channel transurethral resection of the prostate (cTURP) using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. They observed a 48.4% rate of reoperation vs 30.9% after radical prostatectomy (RP). Candidates undergoing cTURP were significantly older as compared to those undergoing RP (75 vs 71 years of age). They noticed the necessity of reoperation among 28.2% of subjects after RP and 37.8% of patients post-cTURP at 3 years after insertion. Although an inclined risk of infectious complications was noted, AUS after cTURP proved similar to AUS after RP in terms of device longevity, AUS after cTURP remained rare in the SEER-Medicare population. They recorded a worse outcome for all cases presented with a history of radiation therapy.
