Apolipoprotein E-related glomerular disorders
Kidney International Dec 05, 2019
Saito T, et al. - In this review, experts proposed the apolipoprotein E (apoE)-related glomerular disorders that have been reported so far and described the role of different apoE abnormalities in these disorders. ApoE was found to be a significant apolipoprotein that plays a fundamental role in lipoprotein metabolism. Abnormal lipoprotein metabolism caused due to apoE mutations was involved in a diversity of disorders. Among these, from the perspective of kidney diseases, various significant pathological conditions were there, and these conditions could be classified into apoE-related glomerular disorders. Meantime, recent studies exhibited that in addition to apoE mutations, the hyperactivity and suppression of macrophages were included in these disorders. Therefore, it must be taken into consideration that different factors other than apoE mutations are accountable for their development. Moreover, macrophages may uptake lipoproteins into the cytoplasm and add to the development of apoE2 homozygote glomerulopathy as foam cells, and their dysfunction may take part in the collection of lipoproteins in the glomerulus causing lipoprotein thrombi in lipoprotein glomerulopathy.
