Antimicrobial stewardship in diabetic ketoacidosis: A single centre experience
Internal Medicine Journal May 10, 2019
Gassiep I, et al. - Researchers assessed epidemiological data on diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a common and severe complication in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients, precipitating infections, microbiological etiology, and antimicrobial prescription practices. In 111 patients, there were 249 DKA presentations. According to results, neutrophilia was not an indicator of infection that was statistically significant. There was the highest association with infection was seen with elevated CRP. An increased probability of infection was seen with lymphopenia. A reduced likelihood of infection was seen with thrombocytosis. This investigation shows a lower incidence of infection vs most previous publications and suggests over-reporting of infection-precipitated DKA. In addition, the study findings support antimicrobial stewardship has a part to play in DKA's management.
