Antimicrobial effects of stannous fluoride toothpaste in distinct oral microenvironments
The Journal of the American Dental Association Feb 26, 2019
Haraszthy V, et al. - Investigators researched over 62 participants (test) and 67 participants (control) to study the comparative impacts of brushing with stannous fluoride toothpaste vs a sodium monofluorophosphate dentifrice on bacteria of different oral microenvironments. The candidates were asked for twice-daily toothbrushing over 8 weeks. They observed a greater decline (14% to 27%) in bacteria after 4 weeks of brushing as compared to controls. They also noted an increased reduction to a range of 33% to 61% at the 8-week evaluation for subjects completing the study. Additionally, they recorded microbial reductions 4 hours after brushing, which increased after lengthened use.
