Antifungal combinations for treatment of cryptococcal meningitis in Africa

New England Journal of Medicine Mar 21, 2018

Molloy SF, et al. - The purpose herein was to investigate 2 treatment strategies that could be more sustainable in Africa compared to the standard of 2 weeks of amphotericin B plus flucytosine and more effective than the widely used fluconazole monotherapy in HIV-infected adults with cryptococcal meningitis. Findings illustrated that 1 week of amphotericin B plus flucytosine and 2 weeks of fluconazole plus flucytosine were effective as an induction therapy for cryptococcal meningitis in resource-limited settings.
