Anti-ganglioside antibodies in patients with Zika virus infection-associated Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Brazil

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Sep 24, 2019

Rivera-Correa J, de Siqueira IC, Mota S, et al. - Because Zika virus infection is associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), researchers analyzed plasma samples from patients with Zika infections associated or not with GBS using a high-throughput ELISA to determine their anti-glycolipid antibody profile, including gangliosides. Observations revealed higher levels of anti-ganglioside antibodies among Zika patients that develop GBS vs Zika patients without GBS. In addition, they identified that both IgM and IgG anti–self-antibodies targeted a broad repertoire of gangliosides in these patients. As neurons are infected by Zika virus, which contain membrane gangliosides, antigen presentation of these infected cells may induce the observed autoimmune anti-ganglioside antibodies implying direct infection-induced autoantibodies as a cause leading to GBS development. Collectively, results confirmed the existence of a connection between anti-ganglioside antibodies and Zika-associated GBS in patients.
