Analysis of treatment outcomes for recurrent Clostridium difficile infections and fecal microbiota transplantation in a pediatric hospital

The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Dec 16, 2018

Aldrich AM, et al. - Researchers involved 175 cases (1–21 years of age) in a retrospective cohort study from January 2010 to December 2014, to identify subjects with recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), including both hospital-acquired CDI (HA-CDI) and community-acquired CDI (CA-CDI) to compare the success rates and review of various treatments employed including fecal microbiota transplant (FMT). They observed preferable use of oral metronidazole followed by oral vancomycin with 30% of recurrence rates. At least one recurrence was noted in 29% cases. Recurrence was observed 2.6 times less in subjects with HA-CDI compared to those with CA-CDI. They found 83% overall success rate for FMT.
