Analysis of the timing of puberty in a recent cohort of Italian girls: Evidence for earlier onset compared with previous studies
Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Jun 24, 2021
Ferrari V, Stefanucci S, Ciofi D, et al. - Researchers investigated a cohort of Italian girls with the aim to analyze the mean age of menarche and the mean age of breast button appearance (B2). In addition, they correlated the B2 developmental stage and age at menarche with the most important clinical and auxological parameters. The data of 1,458 Italian girls, born between 1995 and 2003, were analyzed. Among these girls, the mean age of B2 was 10.16 ± 1.00 years, which is significantly earlier than previously reported for Italian girls; the mean age of menarche was 12.07 ± 0.99 years, which is also significantly earlier than previously reported. They observed an inverse association of age at B2 and menarche with BMI SDS. These outcomes indicate a new trend for an earlier appearance of thelarche and menarche in Italian girls. Data hereby confirm a significant correlation between BMI and age of B2 and menarche. For the Italian female population, the girls’ final height appears to be in line with average height.
