An inflammation-based prognostic score, the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio predicts the morbidity and mortality of patients on parenteral nutrition

Clinical Nutrition Aug 26, 2017

Talaveron JL et al. – this study was conducted to identify the inflammation based prognostic scores of C–reactive protein/albumin ratio which predicts the morbidity and mortality of patients on parenteral nutrition (PN). The authors concluded that at the initial stage of PN treatment, the CRP/albumin score had more prognostic capability than CRP/prealbumin, albumin or prealbumin. This score could assist in identifying patients with higher risk.

Methods

  • A retrospective observational study was conducted for 4 years in which 460 patients were treated with PN.
  • The potential prognostic scores of C–reactive protein (CRP), prealbumin, albumin, and CRP/prealbumin and CRP/albumin were measured.

Results

  • Results demonstrated that more information about morbidity/mortality was given by CRP, albumin and CRP/albumin when compared to prealbumin and CRP/prealbumin.
  • CRP/albumin showed statistical significance for exitus, infection, sepsis and liver failure while CRP/prealbumin for sepsis and liver failure hence, CRP/albumin and CRP/prealbumin significantly predict PN duration.
