An echocardiography‐derived calcium score as a predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events in peritoneal dialysis patients – a prospective cohort study

Nephrology Sep 23, 2021

Sin HK, Wong PN, Lo KY, et al. - Seemingly, echocardiography-derived calcium score (ECS) affords a significant tool to predict major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients independently of diabetes mellitus (DM) and pre-existing CVD.

  • This prospective cohort study comprised 125 prevalent PD patients with mean age 61 ± 13 years.

  • The ECS for each participant was ascertained at baseline.

  • Three independent predictors of MACE (defined as a composite outcome including CV Death, non-fatal myocardial infarction and non-fatal stroke) were: ECS (HR 1.253 / unit increase in ECS), DM (HR 2.467) and pre-existing CVD (HR 2.441).

  • All-cause mortality was predicted by pre-existing CVD (HR 2.156) and serum albumin (HR 0.887 / g/L increase in serum albumin).
