Ambulatory blood pressure and arterial stiffness in individuals with type 1 diabetes

Diabetologia - Clinical and Experimental Diabetes and Metabolism Aug 06, 2018

Lithovius R, et al. - In this substudy, 140 people with type 1 diabetes from the Helsinki metropolitan area who attended the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy Study (FinnDiane) Centre in Helsinki between January 2013 and August 2017 were enrolled to evaluate the use of ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) to determine the presence of masked, nocturnal and white-coat hypertension in type 1 diabetic individuals. In addition, researchers explored links between BP patterns and arterial stiffness to recognize cardiovascular risk in patients. According to the ABPM analysis, 23% of participants with type 1 diabetes had masked hypertension, and these individuals would not have been detected by office BP alone. In individuals with masked hypertension, arterial stiffness was increased. The use of ABPM to identify individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease was supported in this analysis.
