Alterations in enteric virome associate with colorectal cancer and survival outcomes

Gastroenterology Apr 26, 2018

Nakatsu G, et al. - Experts attempted to detect and validate viral taxonomic markers of colorectal cancer (CRC) that could be used in the identification of disease or predicting outcome. Shotgun metagenomic analyses of viromes of fecal samples was performed from 74 patients with CRC (cases) and 92 individuals without CRC (controls) in Hong Kong (discovery cohort). It was deduced that the diversity of the gut bacteriophage community was notably increased in patients with CRC compared to controls. Virome signatures associated with CRC were identified. Yielded results could assist in developing tools to identify individuals with CRC or predict outcomes.
