Alcohol expenditure in grocery stores and their associations with tobacco and food expenditures
BMC Public Health Jun 24, 2019
Uusitalo L, et al. - Given that using automatically registered retail data for research purposes is not subject to underreporting bias, researchers assessed alcohol expenditure and their links with food and tobacco expenditures via loyalty card data (LoCard) from a major Finnish retailer (market share of 47%). They analyzed data from 1,527,217 shopping events in 2016 among 13,274 loyalty card holders from southern Finland. Spending on food increased along with spending on alcoholic beverages. Unhealthy choices like sausages, soft drinks and snacks were the foods most consistently associated with alcohol purchases. Small numbers of alcoholic beverages were usually bought from grocery stores at a single time were small, but when amounts of purchased alcoholic beverages were large, the food budget was not trimmed in order to compensate.
