Age at the time of surgery is not predictive of early patient-reported outcomes after periacetabular osteotomy

Journal of Arthroplasty May 31, 2021

Muffly BT, Zacharias AJ, Jochimsen K, et al. - Researchers conducted a prospective multicenter cohort study of 391 patients undergoing periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) with minimum 2-year follow-up in order to assess HOOSglobal [a recently validated patient reported outcome (PRO) measure following PAO] and WOMAC scores at early follow-up based on age at the time of PAO. Outcomes revealed no differences in early post-operative PROs across multiple age ranges. This establishes that in the setting of symptomatic acetabular dysplasia, PAO can be successful regardless of patient age alone. Hence, researchers suggest that when selecting surgical candidates for PAO, age alone might not be an appropriate criterion.
