Aetiologic testing compared with syndromic management for sexually transmitted infections in HIV‐infected pregnant women in South Africa: A non‐randomised prospective cohort study

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dec 11, 2020

Peters RPH, Klausner JD, de Vos L, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for measuring the frequencies of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and adverse pregnancy outcomes among women receiving either aetiologic testing or syndromic management for STIs. Participants in the study were HIV‐infected pregnant women attending antenatal care services. For this non‐randomised prospective cohort study, participants were recruited to receive aetiologic testing using Xpert® CT/NG and Xpert TV assays or standard syndromic management. Eight hundred forty-one women were enrolled in this analysis. Aetiologic testing is a successful way of reducing the high burden of STIs in pregnant women in South Africa, but the optimal implementation strategy remains to be identified.
