Adverse clinical outcomes among youths with nonsuicidal self‐injury and suicide attempts: A longitudinal cohort study

Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Dec 08, 2021

Bjureberg J, Kuja-Halkola R, Ohlis A, et al. - Researchers aimed at gaining more information concerning risks of clinical outcomes associated with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempts (SAs) that may inform risk assessment and intervention.

  • Researchers clinically assessed a longitudinal cohort of 1,855 youths for NSSI and SA, and followed the cohort (from December, 2011 to December 2013) for the outcomes; diagnosed self-injury, alcohol/substance use disorder, and psychiatric inpatient care data derived from Swedish registers.

  • Risks for subsequent adverse clinical outcomes were higher for youths with NSSI and/or SA.

  • Youths with SA and youths with both NSSI and SA had these excess risks more pronounced, and the risk for psychiatric inpatient care was particularly high in youths with both NSSI and SA.

  • Based on these findings, researchers emphasize that early interventions for youths with NSSI or SA should focus on the risk of subsequent alcohol/substance use disorder besides focusing on suicide prevention.
