Advanced reperfusion strategies for patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and refractory ventricular fibrillation (ARREST): A phase 2, single centre, open-label, randomised controlled trial
The Lancet Dec 11, 2020
Yannopoulos D, Bartos J, Raveendran G, et al. - By performing this first phase 2, single centre, open-label, adaptive, safety and efficacy randomised clinical trial among patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and refractory ventricular fibrillation in the USA, researchers compared extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)-facilitated resuscitation vs standard advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) treatment in this patient population. Eligible patients were randomized to early ECMO-facilitated resuscitation or standard ACLS treatment on hospital arrival. Survival to hospital discharge was assessed as the primary outcome. Findings revealed that significantly improved survival to hospital discharge was conferred by early ECMO-facilitated resuscitation, vs standard ACLS treatment, in patients with OHCA and refractory ventricular fibrillation.
