Adolescent obesity is an independent risk factor for sensorineural hearing loss: Results from the national health and nutrition examination survey 2005 to 2010
Otology & Neurotology Oct 05, 2018
Kohlberg GD, et al. – Authors assessed the potentiality of childhood obesity as a risk factor for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) independent of other metabolic risk factors in this study. They collected and analyzed data from 5,638 adolescents aged 12-19 years from the NHANES database (2005-2010). SNHL rate was found to be 21.5% in obese and 13.44% in normal-weight adolescents. Findings revealed a correlation of obesity with a 1.73-fold increase in the odds of SNHL. Obesity was, therefore, found to be associated with a higher prevalence of SNHL in adolescents (independent of other potential risk factors). The authors asserted that future longitudinal investigations and mechanistic studies are warranted.
