Adolescent age is an independent risk factor for abnormal spirometry among people living with HIV in Kenya

AIDS Jun 09, 2018

Attia EF, et al. - Whether or not the risk of abnormal spirometry was greater among adolescent compared with adult people living with HIV (PLWH) was investigated at the Coptic Hope Center for Infectious Diseases in Nairobi, Kenya. Researchers also evaluated the role of other cofactors for abnormal spirometry. They analyzed data of 427 PLWH and identified abnormal spirometry in 21 (40%) adolescents and 64 (17%) adults. Findings suggested an independent association of adolescent age with increased risk of abnormal spirometry, particularly airflow limitation. Prior pulmonary tuberculosis, kerosene use and smoking pack-years were the other important cofactors for abnormal spirometry.
