Adjunctive effect of modifying the implant-supported prosthesis in the treatment of peri-implant mucositis
Journal of Clinical Periodontology Aug 08, 2019
de Tapia B, et al. - In this 6-month randomized clinical trial, researchers assessed the adjunctive impact of modifying the implant-supported prosthesis to facilitate access to oral hygiene when treating peri-implant mucositis. For this investigation, individuals with peri-implant mucositis were treated with plastic curettes and a plastic tipped ultrasonic device by implant surface debridement. They were then randomly assigned either to modify their prosthesis in order to improve oral hygiene (test group) or not (control group). Forty-eight patients were involved and 45 completed the clinical trial (24 test and 21 control patients). Changes in the modified bleeding index between the control and test groups were 0.50 and 1.14 after 6 months, respectively. It was noted that the changes in implant probing pocket depth at 6 months were −0.02 and 0.31 mm, respectively. After standard mechanical treatment of peri-implant mucositis, modifying the prothesis contour to improve access for oral hygiene significantly improved clinical results.
