Raimundo M, et al. - Researchers sought to characterize the lifestyle and nutritional risk profile related to the Mediterranean diet in a Portuguese population with and without age-related macular degeneration (AMD). A full risk assessment, including lifestyle-related risk factors and a thorough food frequency questionnaire was conducted in all enrolled subjects. In a Mediterranean population, protection against the development of AMD was conferred by high mediSCORE. Increased consumption of fruits and some antioxidant micronutrients, which emerged as statistically significant protective factors was driven by this impact.
