Acne vulgaris and risk of depression and anxiety: A meta-analytic review

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Feb 28, 2020

Samuels DV, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers illustrated the relationship of acne vulgaris with depression and anxiety. A systematic review and meta-analysis of literature published prior to October 1, 2019, from PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Cochrane databases have been performed. In all, 42 studies have been involved. Subgroup analyses and comparisons demonstrated moderating influences based on factors involving age, study setting, and geographic region. Clinicians should pursue aggressive acne treatment due to increased risk of depression and anxiety, and consider psychiatric screening or referrals.
