Accuracy of orthopantomography for apical periodontitis without endodontic treatment

Nardi C, et al. – Using cone–beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging as the reference standard, the aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of orthopantomography (OPT) for the detection of clinically/surgically confirmed apical periodontitis (AP) without endodontic treatment. The study concluded that OPT demonstrated high specificity and positive predictive value. The findings suggested that it was not an accurate imaging technique for the detection of untreated AP, particularly in the incisor area.
