Accuracy of catheter-associated urinary tract infections reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network, January 2010 through July 2018

American Journal of Infection Control Jul 24, 2019

Bagchi S, et al. - Standard definitions for catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) surveillance come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network, with periodical updating to increase their objectivity, credibility, and reliability. Validation of CAUTI data has been done by several state health departments providing insights into the accuracy of CAUTI reporting and adherence to CAUTI definition, so researchers assessed data accuracy measures via pooled mean sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. In addition, they assessed the impact of 2015 CAUTI definition changes by comparing pooled accuracy estimates of validations prior to 2015 with post-2015. Observations revealed the underreporting of CAUTI as a major concern. CAUTI data reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network was identified to have high accuracy in state validations (96.8%). Increased CAUTI reporting accuracy was observed in validation studies conducted pre- and post-2015. Underreporting was evident in two-thirds of misclassification in reporting. Remediable errors in case classification were identified in validation.
