Absolute risk and risk factors for stroke mortality in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD): Population-based cohort study using data linkage
BMJ Open Feb 27, 2019
De La Mata NL, et al. - In end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients, researchers assessed risk factors linked to stroke death. For this investigation, all patients with incident ESKD in Australia (1980–2013) and New Zealand (1988–2012) from the Australian and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) registry were identified, and ultimately 60,823 people with ESKD were enrolled in the study. In general, the cumulative incidence of stroke death was 0.9% and non-stroke death was 36.8% 5 years after treatment for ESKD began. Findings suggested that patients with ESKD who were older, women, had cerebrovascular disease, had ESKD due to hypertensive/renovascular or polycystic kidney disease, and had earlier treatment for ESKD and dialysis had a higher risk of stroke death. Focused stroke prevention interventions can benefit these groups.
