Abnormal cortical and trabecular bone in youth with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease

Diabetes Care Jun 11, 2019

Pham-Short A, et al. - Through a case-control study of 42 youth with coexisting type 1 diabetes and celiac disease (CD), and 40 with type 1 diabetes, the researchers intended to compare bone health in youth with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease vs type 1 diabetes alone. Bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and BMC-to-lean tissue mass (LTM) ratio were estimated. Despite similar bone and muscle size, relative to LTM and lower BMC, youth with both type 1 diabetes and CD had lower BMC, suggestive of abnormal trabecular and cortical bone development. The two conditions as mentioned deliberated a lower bone turnover state.
